Lutz Dammbeck

1948 Lutz Dammbeck is born in Leipzig to secretary Gertrud Dammbeck and racehorse trainer Walter Dammbeck. Spends childhood mainly at the racetrack and on the tennis court.
1964 1964 Attends Leipzig painter Gödel-Schütz's painting and drawing circle; first contact with art books on classic modernism and contemporary literature (Grass, Salinger, etc.). Wins various »GDR Championships« in Junior Tennis.
1965 - 1967 Attends nightschool at the Leipzig College for Graphic and Book Art.
1966 Final secondary school examination and entrance examination for the College for Graphic and Book Art, basic study in Book Design. Then change of major to Poster Design.
1972 As final work a script and scenary for an animation film and participation on the design team for the »complex design« of the newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung's press party.
1972 - 1974 Military service
1974 1974 Contact with DEFA Studio for animated films. In the time following, several films as freelance staff member (author, draughtsman, director). Increasing use of reworked photographs, first as a means to an end, then more and more as independent works. Several photographic productions with Karin Plessing and reworking the prints by painting over them etc.
1976 1975 First non-camera animations on film (35mm).
1978 With H.H. Grimmling, Karin Plessing, G.T. Schade, Jürgen Schäfer, Günter Huniat and Frieder Heinze development of multimedial and crossover exhibition concept »Tangente 1 - Painting, Dance, Film, Music« which is officially forbidden despite contractual agreements.
1979 First sewing of photo-canvas with other materials into paintings and collages. Inclusion of photos, archive material and quotations in film concepts. First drafts for documentary and feature films.
1980 1980 Birth of Sophie, daughter with Karin Plessing.
1982 1981 Beginning of work on the Heracles Concept. Contact with the dancer Fine Kwiatkowski.
1983 First rehearsals and video takes for »Heracles« with Fine Kwiatkowski at the studio of the painters Hans Scheib and Erhard Monden on Sredzky-Strasse, East Berlin.
seit 1983 the artistic activity and the personal life is under surveillance by the GDR Stasi under the filename »Operation Heracles«.
1984 After the filmproject »Heracles« is rejected several times by various DEFA-Studios and the GDR Cultural Ministry, new version as media collage. First public showing at Klubhaus der Nationalen Front, Leipzig.
Together with the painters Grimmling, Firit, Huniat, Heinze and Wegewitz conception and realization of the First Leipzig Fall Salon.
The painters of the First Leipzig Fall Salon participate in a »Donor-Exhibition« to finance future galerist Judy Lybke's planned art gallery »EIGEN+ART« in Leipzig.
1985 1985 Rejection of tenth application since 1975 for permission of a study trip abroad to »non-socialist foreign countries - NSW«; application for emigration.
1986 1986 Move to Hamburg with Karin and Sophie Plessing.
1987 1987 Beginning of the series »Heracles Notes« (works on paper).
1988 Intensified attention to documentary film, interest in this medium's »fictiveness«.
First montages on a databank at the Regional Office for Criminal Investigation in Düsseldorf.
1990 Creation of »Lutz Dammbeck Filmproduktion«.
1992 Further development of the material researched on the Regional Office for Criminal Investigation's databank.
Research, interviews and discussions play an equal role beside painting, photographic works and work with new media.
1994 1994 Member of the Freien Akademie der Künste in Leipzig
1998 Professorship and direction of a project class »New Artistic Media« at the College for Visual Arts Dresden.
Lutz Dammbeck lives in Hamburg.
